The chair of National Cohesion
and integration commission (NICK) added to the voice and said:
“We hope that the
prosecution of those individuals will send a strong message against hate
mongers on social media. Since there are millions of users and dealing with a
few criminals goes a long way to bringing down the hate and criminal behavior
online”
However, why do people spew
hate more when online than when on any other platform? You walk on the streets
and you do not experience any kind of ethnic fuelled hatred, but just log into
your Facebook account and u will be perplexed. People tend to imagine that they
are anonymous when online and infect use them as their hiding zones. Even with
the technological advancements, the government finds it almost impossible bring
the culprits to book. It goes without mention that the ministry of information
declared publicly that it is unable to control the kind of information that is
exchanged on social media especially Facebook and Twitter that have more than 2
million active users countrywide with number on the increase daily.
Even though the amount of hate
being spewed is expected to drop significantly after the conclusion of
political activities, the government together with other stakeholders like the
media and CCK need to develop a strategy on how to curb the vice in future.
Kenyans too need to uphold their moralities and respect the rule of law.
